Prevent Cockroaches from Invading Your Home

We can all agree that cockroaches are one of the most appalling sights, especially when they are in our home. Any bug indoors will scare someone, but cockroaches are far worse than other household pests. Many health risks come along with a roach infestation.

Cockroaches carry many pathogens that lead to illness and disease in humans. Here are some serious pathogens roaches are contaminated with:
  • ·         Bacillus cereu
  • ·         E. coli
  • ·         Coliform
  • ·         Salmonell
  • ·         Klebsiella
  • ·         Pseudomona

What are cockroaches attracted to in my house?

It is evident that cleanliness of a household is the key in preventing roaches from infesting a home. Roaches are attracted to food and water. Making these sources unobtainable to a roach will prevent you from having them in your house.

Anything edible found in your kitchen is food to a roach. Keep your counter tops cleaned off of any crumbs and tightly seal any food in bags or containers that are not refrigerated. If you recently exterminated an infestation of the cockroaches, be sure to clean with disinfectants! Sweep after meals to be certain no food is left behind. Monitor the stove tops for any buildup underneath or dirty stove-range pans.

Damp areas are ideal to a roach and there are plenty of areas in a home with moisture. If you are finding roaches indoors and are sure they are not present from food or filth, check for leaks under sinks or behind walls. It is common to have a roach infestation from water or moisture rather that other substrates they like.
Never allow roaches to go un-treated for indoors. They breed fast and can over run a kitchen in a short period of time. The diseases they cause in humans are real and dangerous; the health risks involved in cockroach infestations should be taken seriously.

Blood Sucking Flies

Flies That Bite and Suck Your Blood

Have you been to the beach recently and been bitten by a large black fly? These are called stable flies and can deliver you a painful bite nearly anywhere your skin is exposed. They may be referred to as dog flies or biting flies to Florida residents. Pest control for flies requires many unique treatments.
Stable flies have been a serious problem in Florida, especially to tourist industry. Beaches are typical locations to encounter stable flies; they breed in the seaweed along the shoreline. You can determine a stable fly easily from other flies by their piercing mouthparts that project at the face of the fly. They resemble the size and appearance of a house except for the bayonet shaped mouthparts.
You may very well encounter a stable fly many miles away from a beach. They do not only infest the shorelines. They are attracted to live stock manure, and decaying vegetative matter near crops.
The only good thing we can state about a stable fly is that they have not been revealed to spread human diseases. Unfortunately, they are vectors to many diseases in animals. Both sexes of the stable fly which is unusual in a fly world.
Stable flies can cause much nuisance to individuals present in their way of searching for a blood meal. These flies are very persistent in finding their next meal, your blood! They will attempt many times till they finally pierce your skin with their mouthparts. You may notice one fly will continuously follow you and land on you in attempt to feed.
The stable fly infestation in a centralized location can become a severe size in a short period. A female stable fly lays between 500 to 600 eggs per each laying. They can hatch within 2-5 days and mature in 14-26 days!

Traffic Deaths Caused in Miami by Rats

A person was killed and five others injured after a rat caused a car crash in Miami on May 5th.   The bizarre incident happened just after midnight in the area of North Miami Avenue and 29th Street when the rat caused an explosion that knocked out street lights at the intersection.

"Believe it or not, a rat was at the top of one of the light poles...and chewed through one of the fusible links at the top of the pole, this caused the street lights to go out," said Capt. Joseph Zahralban, with the City of Miami Fire Rescue. One person died at the scene. Five others were rushed to nearby hospitals. They are in stable to serious condition, Zahralban said.

Reynolds Pest Commits to Best Management Practices

February 17th, 2011 (Jensen Beach-Stuart, Florida) Last year saw an unprecedented spike in the resurgence of bed bugs, with one in five Americans reporting they have had an infestation or know someone who has encountered bed bugs at home or in a hotel, according to a survey by the National Pest Management Association (NPMA). Due to this dramatic increase, “Company Name” has committed to following the Best Management Practices (BMPs) for Bed Bugs, which were recently released by NPMA.

Developed cohesively by industry professionals, regulators, academics and entomologists, these guidelines provide step-by-step practices for professionals treating bed bugs, as well as consumers securing a professional to handle an infestation. For treatment to be effective and lasting, it is imperative that professionals and homeowners act as a team. For example, the BMPs provide specific preparations homeowners can make to facilitate a successful professional inspection, such as reducing clutter, laundering clothes and making minor repairs. By following these guidelines, “Company Name” will ensure its clients are receiving optimum service- from detection, to the training of technicians to treatment tactics to post treatment evaluation, while clients will know what questions to ask, what they can do to ensure the success of treatment, and what to expect from their professional partner.

“Our number one goal is always to provide excellent and effective service to our customers, and the Best Management Practices will help us do just that,” said Brian Reynolds, President/ Certified Operator in Charge of Reynolds Pest Management, Inc. “Not only will the BMPs provide us with the best possible tools to eradicate this stubborn pest, they will empower our clients to know what part they can play in helping us successfully solve their problem. Here are the Top Ten Bed Bugs Tips from the EPA:

  • Make sure you really have bed bugs, not fleas or ticks or other insects.

  • You can verify your insect on our bed bug web page or check with your local extension agent.

  • Don’t panic.

  • Eliminating bed bugs is difficult, but it is not impossible. Don’t throw out all of your belongings; most of them can be treated and saved. Throwing out belongings is costly, may spread the infestation, and could be unnecessarily stressful.

  • Think through your treatment options -- Don’t immediately reach for the spray can.

  • Be comprehensive in your approach. Integrated pest management Exit EPA disclaimer techniques may reduce bed bug populations and limit pesticide exposure to you and your family. If pesticide treatment is needed, it is best to bring in a professional. There is help available to learn about integrated treatment options. (2 pp, 63k, About PDF) Exit EPA disclaimer

  • Reduce the number of hiding places -- Clean up the clutter.

  • A cluttered home provides more places for bed bugs to hide and makes locating and treating for them more difficult. If bed bugs are in your mattress, using a mattress/box spring encasements makes it more difficult them to get to you while you sleep. To be effective they must be left in place for a year. Be sure to buy a product that has been tested for bed bugs and is strong enough to last for the full year without tearing.

  • Frequently wash and heat-dry your bed linens.

  • Wash bed spreads, and clothing that touches the floor to reduce bed bug populations. Bed bugs and their eggs can hide in laundry containers/hampers so clean them when you do the laundry.

  • Do-it-yourself freezing is not usually reliable for bed bug control.

  • While freezing can effectively kill bed bugs, temperatures must remain extremely low for an extended period of time. Home freezers typically are not cold enough to kill bed bugs. Freezing temperatures outside may be used to kill bed bugs, but can take several days (at 0oF) to almost a week (at 20oF).

  • High temperatures can kill bed bugs.

  • Raising the indoor temperature with the thermostat or space heaters won’t do the job, though. Space heaters must always be used with care, as they have the potential to cause fires and serious burns. Specialized equipment and very high temperatures are required to successfully heat treat a structure. Black plastic bags in the sun might work to kill bed bugs in luggage or small items, provided the contents become hot enough (approximately 110oF for at least 3 hours).

  • Don’t pass your bed bugs on to others.

  • Bed bugs are excellent hitchhikers. If you throw out a piece of furniture that is harboring bed bugs, take steps to destroy the item so that no one else adopts it (along with the bugs!).

  • Reduce populations to reduce bites.

  • Thorough vacuuming reduces populations. Carefully vacuum rugs, floors, under beds, around bed legs, bed frames, and all cracks and crevices around the room. Thoroughly vacuum upholstered furniture. Change the bag after each use so the bed bugs can’t escape. Place the used bag in a tightly sealed plastic bag and in an outside garbage bin. will reduce the populations.

  • Turn to the professionals, if needed.

  • Hiring an experienced, responsible pest control professional can increase the likelihood and the speed of success in eliminating bed bugs from your home. If you hire an expert, ensure it is company with a reputable history and ask them to use an IPM approach. (53 pp, 42mb, About PDF) Contact your State pesticide Agency for guidance about hiring professional pest control companies.

How to - Pest Control - Tick Infestation-Florida

This was a case where Reynolds Pest Management had an opportunity to use it's expertise in pest control for this infestation of Brown Dog Ticks in a Martin County Florida home. This tick problem had to be addressed on multiple occasions which is often the case at the homes we treat on The Treasure Coast, and in Palm Beach County, Florida.
Most of the tick problems we encounter in Stuart, Jensen Beach, Port Saint Lucie, Jupiter, and Palm Beach are Brown Dog Ticks.

    Ticks
    Appearance:
Ticks come in a variety of colors as regards specific species. Smaller than a sunflower seed (1/8 inch); yet if engorged with blood, adults can be up to 5/8-inch long.  Nymphal (or immature) ticks are less than 1/16-inch. Common problem ticks include the Brown Dog tick,  American Dog tick, deer or black legged tick and lone star tick.
    Habit:
While some species require moisture to survive, others can and do in more arid environments. They habituate near wooded and highly vegetated areas.
    Diet:
They consume blood meals during all of the four developmental stages in a tick's life cycle. All females and males of most species feed on blood of mammals, birds and reptiles.
    Reproduction:
From egg and larvae, to nymph and adult; ticks have only six legs during their larval stage and eight legs during the nymphal and adult stages. A tick's life cycle will support and transfer pathogens (organisms that cause diseases) in the animals they infect and can be passed through all stages of a tick's life cycle.
Reynolds Pest Management offers a variety of solutions to many pest problems including Tick control.
Reynolds Pest Management offers full service pest control for homes and business'. Reynolds Pest Management also offers insect, weed, and fertilization services to ensure a beautiful, bug free lawn all year round.
