Have you been to the beach recently and been bitten by a large black fly? These are called stable flies and can deliver you a painful bite nearly anywhere your skin is exposed. Seems like there have been a lot more pest control calls in our area for flea and tick related issues in the home. Why the urban environmental pest management industry is important:

Pests destroy homes and buildings and their contents; termites alone cause over $5 billion in damage annually.

Pests can transmit disease-causing organisms including West Nile Virus, Lyme Disease, malaria, plague, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, hantavavirus, and encephalitis.

Insect stings force half-a-million people to the emergency room every year.

Rodents consume or contaminate about 20 percent of the world's food supply. They carry fleas and ticks that potentially carry diseases. Rodents have also been implicated in fires across the country by chewing wires and spilling flammables.

Bed bugs have made a resurgence in the United States. While no one is sure of the exact reason, experts suggest it may be due to more targeted treatment practices and increased international travel.

Most people tend to think of pest management in terms of residential problems (ants, rodents, cockroaches, termites, fleas, etc.). The importance of the industry to the nation as a whole is much broader including food and health protection:

Public health officials attribute the quality of life we have today to three things: better pharmaceuticals and vaccines, better sanitation and better pest control.

Rats bite more than 45,000 people each year. Rats can cause fires by chewing wires and transmit disease organisms such as rat bite fever, salmonella, trichinosis, murine typhus, the plague, and leptospirosis.

According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, more than two million Americans are allergic to stinging insects, more than 500,000 enter hospital emergency rooms every year suffering from insect stings, and between 40-150 people a year die as a result of these stings.

Without pest management practices, pests could destroy more than 50 percent of our food crops. Only 11 percent of the average U.S. disposable income is spent on food compared to 19.9 percent in Japan and 52.6 percent in China.

In a recent consumer survey, 93 percent of people expressed concern over finding insects within their home. According to a survey cited by the Army Community Service, insects and bugs rank as the public's third most common fear, behind public speaking and heights.

Seven to eight percent of the general population is allergic to cockroaches. Studies of inner city children in Atlanta with chronic wheezing and runny noses revealed that 44 percent of them were allergic to cockroaches. Recent surveys have determined that cockroach allergens are the number three contributors to children's asthma.

Cockroach suppression and eradication is vital to health care facilities, homes, and sites where food is prepared or served. Cockroaches contaminate food and spread filth by walking through contaminated areas. They commonly carry staphylococci, streptococcus, coli-form, molds, salmonella, yeasts, and clostridia.

Innovations in pest management parallel an increase in life expectancy. A child born in 1900 had a life expectancy of just 49 years while a child born in 2010 had a life expectancy of 78 years.

In a consumer survey, renters and homeowners were asked about the problems they've had with their homes or apartments. The number one problem they cited was insects. In fact, nearly half (45 percent) of the complaints dealt with insects or rodents in the home.

It would be difficult to find any segment of the food industry that could comply with federal sanitation and health regulations without an adequate pest management program.

Traffic Deaths Caused in Miami by Rats

A person was killed and five others injured after a rat caused a car crash in Miami on May 5th. The bizarre incident happened just after midnight in the area of North Miami Avenue and 29th Street when the rat caused an explosion that knocked out street lights at the intersection.

"Believe it or not, a rat was at the top of one of the light poles...and chewed through one of the fusible links at the top of the pole, this caused the street lights to go out," said Capt. Joseph Zahralban, with the City of Miami Fire Rescue. One person died at the scene. Five others were rushed to nearby hospitals. They are in stable to serious condition, Zahralban said.

A January 2nd, 2011 article in Miami Herald Tribune chronicled the ongoing debate over a University of Florida IFAS study showing the potential harmful effects on water quality posed by summertime “fertilizer bans” featured in many local ordinances.

University of Florida researcher George Hochmuth is sick of defending his research, which is at the heart of a simmering battle over how much fertilizer people can put on their lawns during the rainy summer months.

"I think it's unfair and unprofessional to be charging good scientists who have their heart in the right place," says Hochmuth, an environmental science professor. "The science is almost being held hostage."

Hochmuth and a team of seven researchers at UF's Institute for Food and Agricultural Studies have been lambasted by environmentalist groups and other scientists for their study that suggests banning fertilizers in the rainy season does more harm than good in the effort to keep pollutants out of waterways.

Titled "Unintended Consequences Associated with Certain Urban Fertilizer Ordinance," the study was published in March 2009 amid virulent debate at the Capitol -- and at the request of industry lobbyists.
Though critics have been loud in their indictment of the study, which the institute acknowledges was funded by the fertilizer industry, it has been used at government meetings statewide to slow regulation.
Now Sarasota County, which in 2007 enacted the first strict fertilizer ordinance in Florida, has taken aim at the IFAS study.

"It's tobacco science," said County Commissioner Jon Thaxton, who is leading the way at the county to compel researchers to release documents associated with the study. "At best, it's an unsubstantiated opinion piece, but that's not what they're using it for," claims Thaxton, who in 2007 was appointed to Gov. Charlie Crist's Florida Consumer Fertilizer Task Force to provide recommendations to the state. "They're using it and calling it science and taking it to Tallahassee to write laws with."

Since Sarasota passed its fertilizer restrictions, 40 other cities and counties in Florida have passed similar ordinances. At the same time, legislators have tried but failed to pass a law that would pre-empt the local ordinances and weaken the restrictions on fertilizer use.

Such legislation is certain to be introduced again this year when legislators meet in March, said Sen. Mike Bennett, R-Bradenton.

"I can assure you there will be a war," said Bennett, who co-sponsored a bill last year that would have pre-empted local regulation of certain kinds of fertilizers. The bill ultimately was not approved by legislators.
As Bennett acknowledges, his stance will depend on what he hears from the experts on the subject, namely researchers at IFAS.

State Officials Urge Consumer Awareness, Professional Treatment of Bedbug Infestations

TALLAHASSEE – Florida Agriculture and Consumer Services Commissioner Charles H. Bronson and State Surgeon General Dr. Anna Viamonte-Ros are urging consumers to choose a licensed pest control company to help control breakouts of bedbugs in homes. Efforts by homeowners to treat bedbug infestations rarely succeed, and using the wrong pesticide or using it incorrectly can make you, your family and your pets sick.

Prior to the 1950s, bedbugs were common pests in the United States, but few people know much about them today due to the use of chlorinated pesticides like DDT and lindane, which successfully wiped them out in the past.
However, over the last decade, bed bugs have slowly made a comeback as many of the pesticides of the past can no longer be used. Staying at a hotel, going to the movies, riding in a taxi or spending time in other places where people congregate are now commonplace activities that can spread bedbugs.
Like many states, Florida has recently had an increase in the number of bedbug complaints with people traveling today more than ever, and controlling the pests has proven difficult with pesticides that are available today.
The treatment for bedbugs is a growing cause of concern. They come out at night and are hard to detect. Since they can often remain unnoticed while breeding an even larger population, it can frustrate those having to battle infestations.
Reports of pesticides and other chemicals being misused in the treatment of bedbugs have made headlines in many states across the nation,” Commissioner Bronson said. “Due to the difficulty in controlling this pest, the public may resort to the use of pesticides in ways that are not in compliance with their label directions and are frankly unsafe.”
As a result, he is urging consumers to choose a licensed pest control company to combat infestations in a home or business.
State Surgeon General Viamonte-Ros agrees:
“Application of pesticides or chemicals by untrained or unlicensed individuals is a primary concern of the Department of Health because misusing pesticides in a desperate attempt to control infestations can lead to harmful exposures in private homes, public housing, workplaces and institutions such as hospitals, nursing homes and schools.”
Avoiding bed bugs and finding them early are important in controlling these pests. The following are a few hints for consumers that are recommended by the University of Florida:

Choose a licensed pest control company which has experience, knowledge and knows how to manage bedbugs.
Effective control of the pests often takes more than one visit.
Proper fumigation by a pest control company can control bedbugs with a single treatment.
Consumers should know that bedbugs are not known to carry diseases.
Adult bedbugs are the size of an apple seed while immature ones are smaller. They can be found in the seams of bedding and sofas, behind headboards, picture frames, dressers, backpacks and many other places.
Signs of the pest include small brownish-red to purple spotting on infested materials.
Not all people react to bedbug bites so reacting to a bite is not always the best way to determine whether your home is infested by the pests.
De-clutter your home to decrease places where bedbugs can hide.

Inspect items before entering the home with them and take precautions against bringing home bed bugs after traveling.

Don’t panic.

Eliminating bed bugs is difficult, but it is not impossible. Don’t throw out all of your belongings; most of them can be treated and saved. Throwing out belongings is costly, may spread the infestation, and could be unnecessarily stressful.

Think through your treatment options -- Don’t immediately reach for the spray can.

Be comprehensive in your approach. Integrated pest management techniques may reduce bed bug populations and limit pesticide exposure to you and your family. Reduce the number of hiding places -- Clean up the clutter.

A cluttered home provides more places for bed bugs to hide and makes locating and treating for them more difficult. If bed bugs are in your mattress, using a mattress/box spring encasements makes it more difficult them to get to you while you sleep. To be effective they must be left in place for a year. Be sure to buy a product that has been tested for bed bugs and is strong enough to last for the full year without tearing.

Frequently wash and heat-dry your bed linens.

Wash bed spreads, and clothing that touches the floor to reduce bed bug populations. Bed bugs and their eggs can hide in laundry containers/hampers so clean them when you do the laundry.

Do-it-yourself freezing is not usually reliable for bed bug control.

While freezing can effectively kill bed bugs, temperatures must remain extremely low for an extended period of time. Home freezers typically are not cold enough to kill bed bugs. Freezing temperatures outside may be used to kill bed bugs, but can take several days (at 0oF) to almost a week (at 20^oF).

High temperatures can kill bed bugs.

Raising the indoor temperature with the thermostat or space heaters won’t do the job, though. Space heaters must always be used with care, as they have the potential to cause fires and serious burns. Specialized equipment and very high temperatures are required to successfully heat treat a structure. Black plastic bags in the sun might work to kill bed bugs in luggage or small items, provided the contents become hot enough (approximately 110^oF for at least 3 hours).

Don’t pass your bed bugs on to others.

Bed bugs are excellent hitchhikers. If you throw out a piece of furniture that is harboring bed bugs, take steps to destroy the item so that no one else adopts it (along with the bugs!).

Reduce populations to reduce bites.

Thorough vacuuming reduces populations. Carefully vacuum rugs, floors, under beds, around bed legs, bed frames, and all cracks and crevices around the room. Thoroughly vacuum upholstered furniture. Change the bag after each use so the bed bugs can’t escape. Place the used bag in a tightly sealed plastic bag and in an outside garbage bin. will reduce the populations.

This was a case where Reynolds Pest Management had an opportunity to use it's expertise in pest control for this infestation of Brown Dog Ticks in a Martin County Florida home. This tick problem had to be addressed on multiple occasions which is often the case at the homes we treat on The Treasure Coast, and in Palm Beach County, Florida.

Ticks

Appearance:

Ticks come in a variety of colors as regards specific species. Smaller than a sunflower seed (1/8 inch); yet if engorged with blood, adults can be up to 5/8-inch long. Nymphal (or immature) ticks are less than 1/16-inch. Common problem ticks include the Brown Dog tick, American Dog tick, deer or black legged tick and lone star tick.

Habit:

While some species require moisture to survive, others can and do in more arid environments. They habituate near wooded and highly vegetated areas.

Diet:

They consume blood meals during all of the four developmental stages in a tick's life cycle. All females and males of most species feed on blood of mammals, birds and reptiles.

Reproduction:

From egg and larvae, to nymph and adult; ticks have only six legs during their larval stage and eight legs during the nymphal and adult stages. A tick's life cycle will support and transfer pathogens (organisms that cause diseases) in the animals they infect and can be passed through all stages of a tick's life cycle.
